Joseph Sanchez, a 46-year-old hairdresser from Inwood, said he was preparing a protein smoothie in July 2022 when the Nutribullet’s blending cup suddenly burst. The explosion sent jagged plastic pieces into his dominant hand, resulting in severe lacerations and a severed artery.
“The cup exploded, deeply lacerating” his right hand and fingers, “and leaving him terrified as he saw his blood gushing onto the floor all around him,” according to the lawsuit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court.
In a state of shock, Sanchez managed to tie a necktie around his arm as a makeshift tourniquet before seeking emergency medical care. Despite quick action, the injuries have led to ongoing pain, numbness, and lasting trauma, he claims.
According to the complaint, the high-speed blender creates pressure and heat during use, which can cause the device to over-pressurize and rupture without warning. Sanchez alleges that Nutribullet has known about this defect for more than a decade, citing a 2011 incident and referencing more than 140 lawsuits filed against the company in federal court since 2014.
In 2022, Nutribullet paid a $10 million settlement in a class action lawsuit over similar injuries, though the company did not admit liability. Sanchez argues the company has failed to address the risks—never issuing a recall or warning to consumers.
“This was a very frightening and disturbing event,” said Sanchez’s attorney, Daniel G. Ecker to the New York Post.
